Between 2016 and 2018, Haiping Pan, a 44-year-old Chinese national, was at the center of a money-laundering scheme. He worked in tandem with others to launder as much as million each month. The operation involved discreet cash pickups in major cities like Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. These pickups were then followed by a convoluted series of currency exchanges between the United States, China, and Mexico. Pan's financial expertise and connections with Mexican cartel members allowed him to secretly move the drug money through various businesses and banks worldwide. In the end, the ill-gotten gains found their way back to the traffickers in Mexico.During this scheme, Pan and his accomplices carried out one to two cash pickups every week. Each pickup ranged from 0,000 to million. Altogether, Pan knowingly facilitated or attempted to launder approximately million in drug money. While living in Guadalajara, Mexico, Pan managed the money transfers. He was arrested there and subsequently brought to the United States in 2022. On Thursday, during a hearing in Chicago federal court, U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman handed down the 10-year prison sentence.
